Training For The Race Of My Life

cancer Is Not Welcome In My Bones

I have never been an athlete.  It doesn’t come easy to me but as the birthdays come and go it is more and more a necessity to stay in shape. One day prior to my first chemo treatment I was running. I wasn’t sure at that point if the cancer had spread to my bones or other organs but I was running and thought, every step I take my bones are getting stronger. So, if the cancer wanted to set up shop in my bones, my bones were stronger than the cancer and it would not be welcome.

The Start Of Something Good

Mark your calendars for January 28, 2012! A group of my friends (aka Livin the Dream Team) are organizing a 5K in my honor! The first annual (I hope) ME STRONG 5K – Linda’s Run for Life will be January 28, 2012, in Deland. Details and logistics are in the works but I wanted everyone to know about it. It’s for runners and walkers of all ages so start thinking about your training now. Training schedules will be available if you need them.

Physical Strength Comes From Mental Strength Training

When the Team came up with the idea, I was so excited, touched, and happy that it was happening. In the past year, I trained for and ran a marathon. In addition, I did my best to cross-train with weights at the gym. During that time I had thoughts about why I was training so hard.  In the back of my mind, there were thoughts about training for the race of my life. 26.2 miles isn’t easy and requires considerable training.  However, something told me my training would serve a bigger purpose. I believe that the reason I am feeling so great and able to fight cancer head-on is that I have been active and am fit.

Get The Community Moving

When my friends approached me about a run I told them that I didn’t want it to be the standard 5K to raise money in the fight against cancer. It is my goal to have people live healthy lives so when they have to face the fight of their life, their body is prepared to do so mentally and physically. It may be cancer, it may be a big move, a sick family member, whatever it is, having a strong, fit body will help you through those times.

Train For The Race Of Your Life

However, having said that, it does cost money to have a race so there will be sponsorship opportunities and a cost to run, just like any other race but it is my goal for people to get moving. I would love for people to train for the races of their lives, not just the 5K in January. Make it part of your life. You will be glad you did.

I will post details about the race as they evolve. If you live far away and can’t come to the race, start training, and find a local race on the same day or you could do a virtual race. Choose a route that is a 5K and run or walk it on the same day. And don’t stop the day after.  Keep exercise as a part of your everyday life.
